CELEBRITY Celebrity feuds

The Material Girl and the Mother Monster have been butting heads for more than a few years now, and Madonna seems to be adding fuel to the fire with her latest Instagram posts.

In the wake of her success with 'A Star is Born,' Lady Gaga has grown somewhat notorious for repeating the same line at every stop on the press tour. It goes: “There can be 100 people in a room and 99 of them don’t believe in you, but all it takes is one and it just changes your whole life.”

Apparently, this sounded a little too familiar to Madge.

She posted an Instagram story on December 3 of herself being interviewed in the '80s saying, "If there are 100 people in a room and 99 say they liked it, I only remember the one person who didn’t.”

While Gaga's take focuses on the positive impact of that one person, and Madonna's on the negative, it was apparently still enough of a coincidence for Madonna to post another photo on Instagram with the caption “Don’t F**k with Me Monday." She must have known she would be inviting heaps of Little Monsters to go wild in the comments.

One user wrote, "Lady Gaga is God, Madonna it's over."

Another had a slightly more thoughtful comment that said, "I really love Lady Gaga. She's really talented and I think we really haven't seen an artist like her in a long time. But before Gaga there was Britney and Christina. And before Britney and Christina there was Madonna. Everybody should know their place."

They seem to be on to something. In 2012, Madonna publicly stated, “I certainly think [Gaga] references me a lot in her work.” She then called the song 'Born This Way' "reductive" and noted that it sounded very familiar. What she was referring to was her own song 'Express Yourself,' which has been compared to the Gaga track.

In an interview in 2016, radio host Zane Lowe compared the artists and Gaga replied, “Madonna and I are very different." She continued, "I wouldn’t make that comparison at all and I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna, she’s a nice lady, and she’s had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.”

It's difficult to ignore the subtle dig, but Gaga seems to be trying to keep some level of peace, as she said of Madonna in her 2017 Netflix documentary, “I still admire her, no matter what she might think of me.”

Could it be that Madge really isn't getting the respect she deserves, or is it Gaga's campaign for an Oscar—something she has never achieved herself—that's setting off this puerile social media strike? All we do know is that somewhere, there are 100 people in a room...
