Celebrities are used to daily criticism, but sometimes the press (or someone) will take that too far and make unfounded libelous claims. In some cases, they report an inconvenient truth that damages the reputation of someone famous with a brand to protect, so they lash out with lawsuits to silence the stories.
Marilyn Manson has brought a defamation suit against his ex-fiancée, Evan Rachel Wood, just two weeks before the release of an HBO documentary about the abuse she allegedly suffered during their relationship. Wood first came forward in 2021 and publicly accused Manson of sexually assaulting and abusing her when they dated between 2006 and 2010. In the following year, four more women filed sexual assault lawsuits against Manson. He has always emphatically denied the claims and is now taking Wood to court in an effort to defend himself.
Manson's lawyers claim that Wood, along with her alleged "on-again-off-again" partner Ashley Gore, engaged in a planned character attack to publicly paint him as a sexual abuser, which is "a malicious falsehood that has derailed Warner's (Manson's) successful music, TV, and film career." He claims that the pair impersonated an FBI agent by sending him a falsified letter, and were responsible for coordinating a series of false accusations against him from his other alleged victims. Manson has asked for his case to be tried in front of a jury.
