FASHION Audrey Hepburn

News of Hubert de Givenchy’s death has caused ripples in the fashion world. From his humble beginnings in the 1940s to pioneering fashion through the 20th and 21st centuries, Givenchy made a remarkable impact on the fashion world. Perhaps his most recognisable design was the the little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. Hepburn and Givenchy went on to become one of fashion’s most iconic pairings, with countless tailor-made collaborations. Givenchy was even made the executor of Hepburn’s estate when she died in 1993.

But how did this dynamic duo meet? For one, it wasn’t on the set of ‘Tiffany’s’. Back when Hepburn was an unknown actress in Hollywood, she crossed paths with Givenchy on the set of ‘Sabrina’. The year was 1954 and Givenchy was hired to design her on-screen wardrobe. Givenchy was actually disappointed when he met Hepburn, as he thought he was going to work with the fierce Katherine Hepburn. However, Audrey went on to become his muse, and they formed a lifelong relationship. In the biggest testament to their bond, Jayne Sheridan wrote “we might ask 'Did Audrey Hepburn create Givenchy or was it the other way around?'" in her book ‘Fashion, Media, Promotion: The New Black Magic’. Givenchy would design clothes for six films starring Audrey Hepburn, as well as her iconic wardrobe off-screen.
