Family is key to Simone Rocha’s success. She’s the daughter of John Rocha, a renowned Hong Kong designer who's based in Ireland. John is so revered he even landed on a set of Irish post stamps back in 2010. Simone has followed in his footsteps, taking her own two-year-old daughter along the way. She got her start working in John’s studio until she was 18. Then, she went to school and exhibited her collection at the Tate Modern gallery.
Much like her father, Simone Rocha enlisted her young daughter as her muse, even before she was born. Her spring/summer 2016 collection featured pieces inspired by hospital gowns and nurses costumes. “My collections come from a very personal place, so when I was pregnant and feeling all those emotions, it was unavoidable”. Her recent shows at Goldsmiths' Hall and Lancaster Gate are also inspired by her child, among other things. “For that to be strong and authentic, it has to come from a personal experience, like having a kid or seeing a Louise Bourgeois sculpture”, she told Vogue.
