In the world of craft cocktails, this Washington, D.C. bar is making waves like never before. Sound waves, that is. The bar team at The Columbia Room figured out how to use cymatics to sound-stir their latest cocktail creation.

"Our brilliant chef Johnny [Spero] was researching sound waves and found some videos about different ways of displaying cymatics, or 'the use of frequency to physically manifest sound waves into solids or liquid,'" beverage director J.P. Fetherston told Maxim.

Using the singing bowl instruments that are often seen in yoga classes or used as tools for sound therapy, they were able to make strong enough vibrations to mix the drink.

"We saw it as an interesting means to both gently agitate a cocktail, so yes, 'stirring' it in effect, but also produce a soothing tone that will hopefully have a physical effect on guests. This tied it to research we had seen about the ways that different sounds and sound waves can affect what we taste," Fetherston continued.

The new menu is called Spectrum, and it features four different cocktail and small bite pairings. Check out The Columbia Room in Washington, D.C. to try your first sound-stirred drink.
