Soft drink Rubicon is having to adapt to changing times, falling victim to the newly-introduced sugar tax. New policies have raised the taxes on drinks with over five grams of sugar per 100 millilitres. This mean the recipe will change for all flavours of Rubicon, from Passion Fruit to Pomegranate. According to Munchies, they all have 50% less sugar.

A.G. Barr is the company behind Rubicon. They’re based in Scotland, and also make Irn-Bru and St. Clement’s. When Irn-Bru had a recipe change earlier this year, fans weren’t too happy about it. There was even a petition, “Hands off our Irn-Bru. Please dont change the recipe by cutting sugar for sweeteners [sic]”, which reached more than 22,000 signatures. Speaking with Munchies, a spokesperson for A.G. Barr said “for our Rubicon exotic fruit juices, we worked closely with drinkers to understand their needs and taste preferences”. They added that “our ‘regular’ range now contains half the sugar”.
