Is Kylie Jenner to blame for the rise of lip fillers?

While this procedure was not invented on behalf of the reality star, she has come under fire for her use of semipermanent lip injections. After months of pressing questions, Jenner admitted to having temporary lip fillers on ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ back in 2015.
Before she admitted to the cosmetic procedure, many took to the internet and accepted the ‘Kylie Jenner Challenge’ in hopes to achieve her prominent pout. Young girls were sticking their lips in shot glasses and sucking in extra air to complete the challenge, and the results were less than satisfactory. Many ended up with either severe swelling or the glasses broke under pressure and led to other injuries.
After the Jenner revealed her secret, lip augmentations skyrocketed in popularity, becoming the second-fasting-growing facial procedure in the United States since 2000. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the rate of fillers rose from 1.8 million procedures in 2010, to 2.6 million in 2016.
While the young Jenner sister cannot completely be to blame, the trend points toward the publicity of her cosmetic surgery potentially contributing to an already budding trend.
However, since then, the popularity of the plump look seems to be slowing down. Lip augmentations were up 4% in 2016 and then only 2% in 2017, according to Allure.
We'll see what trends 2018 has to hold.
