Oscar-nominated films with female leads make the most money, new analysis shows. Despite generally having lower budgets, female-led films tend to be a hit at the box office. BBC News reports that every dollar invested in a female-led film earns back $2.12. However, out of all the Oscar-nominated films made since 2013, only 28% have had an actress on the top billing. Kate Kinninmont, head of Women in Film and Television UK, told BBC News "Women are not bad box office, on or behind screen". When comparing box office and budget, Oscar-nominated films with a female leads make 33% more profit than films with male leads.

2017 was a big year for female-led films. The top three highest-grossing films all had women leads: 'Wonder Woman', 'The Last Jedi' and 'Beauty and the Beast'. The last time this happened was back in the 1950s. British and Irish stars have scored many nominations at this year's Oscars. In the Best Actress category, Sally Hawkins and Saoirse Ronan will face off with Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand.
