Artist to watch: Jessie Reyez
The powerhouse singer-songwriter is tearing down industry walls
Not long after the EP's release, Reyez was nominated for two iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards, and performed her passionate song 'Figures' at the 2017 BET Awards. She was also a guest performer on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.'
The recent acclaim marks Reyez's clear success, but her song and short film 'Gatekeeper' could push her even further into the role of a societal catalyst. Describing an encounter with an unnamed music business mogul, Reyez shows how men with power too often dangle the promise of fame in return for sex. With her lifelong dream of a successful music career in sight but her strong morals telling her to take a different route, Reyez describes the internal battle she was put in — one many other women have faced before her.
With a mission to both empower and entertain, Reyez is taking tearing down misogyny with a voice to remember.
