US musician XXXTentacion shot dead at 20
The rapper scored three top 40 hits on the UK singles chart
American musician XXXTentacion has been shot and killed aged 20. The rapper and singer, real name Jahseh Onfroy, was leaving a motorbike dealership in south Florida when he was shot by an armed suspect. Investigators believe the suspects were conducting an armed robbery. Broward County police said the rapper was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 16:51 EST on June 18.
Onfroy began releasing music at age 16, and released his breakout single, ‘Look at Me!’, in 2015. The song gained popularity in late 2016 and early 2017, coinciding with legal troubles in Onfroy’s personal life. He was arrested in October 2016 on charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, as well as domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment. During his time in prison, ‘Look at Me!’ skyrocketed in popularity, and led Onfroy to sign a record deal with EMPIRE. Weeks later, the musician was released on probation.
After he got out of prison in March 2016, XXXTentacion released a number of albums, including ‘Revenge’, ‘17’ and ‘?’. The latter debuted number three on the UK album chart. On the singles chart, Onfroy scored three top 40 hits: ‘Sad!’, ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Jocelyn Flores’.
