CELEBRITY Gail Simmons

Anyone who has seen the show 'Top Chef' knows the culinary icon, Gail Simmons. On her 15th season of the show, Simmons has been involved in both the restaurant industry and the world of entertainment for a while now. Recently, she hosted the International Association of Culinary Professionals Awards in New York City, and sat down with Mic.com for an interview.

When asked about her feelings on the current feminist movements, Simmons said, "The #MeToo movement is amazing. It’s long overdue. I’m so glad women are speaking up. We’re realizing that these tragic, terrible experiences have been so common for so long. It’s appalling, atrocious and unacceptable. We think we’re so progressive, but what has changed in 60 years?"

The restaurant industry often gets a negative stereotype for poor treatment of workers and sexist management. "Restaurants are mostly mom and pop shops—more pop than mom. That doesn’t mean this behavior is acceptable," Simmons said. "For so long, restaurants have run and functioned outside the realm of standards that many modern companies have, where there are policies in place for gender and diversity issues."

As the world is experiencing strong waves of change and feminism throughout nearly every industry, it is these strong celebrity voices that help it continue to make headlines. Simmons continues to be a culinary powerhouse on the 'Top Chef' set.
