Some big UK celebs have joined an ambitious animals rights campaign. Big names like Pierce Brosnan, Simon Cowell and Ricky Gervais have signed a letter to Indonesia’s President, Joko Widodo. The letter asks Indonesia to stop killing dogs and cat for the country’s meat trade. The coalition is called Dog Meat Free-Indonesia, or DMFI for short, and groups such as Four Paws and the Change for Animals Foundation are among those involved in the campaign. Leona Lewis, Brian May and Peter Egan have also joined the DMFI.

The letter to President Widodo reads, “more than one million dogs and cats are transported throughout Indonesia to supply markets, slaughterhouses and restaurants”, as found on the Change for Animals website. “These animals, many of them stolen pets, are subjected to crude and brutal methods of capture, transport and slaughter… the immense suffering and fear they must endure is heartbreaking and absolutely shocking”, the letter reads. Last year, an investigation was launched after Bali tourists reported that they had unknowingly eaten dog meat.
