Munroe Bergdorf forced to cancel shoot due to racist and transphobic harassment
The incident happened just a day after she highlighted that "statistically I only have four years left to live"
Had to abandon a shoot today in Times Square after a group of guys started catcalling me, then one clocked I was trans which sparked them all beginning to shout "yo that's a nigga", "that's a dude".— Munroe Bergdorf ???????? (@MunroeBergdorf) 6 June 2018
The model found herself under the public eye as the first transgender person to front a L'Oréal campaign in the UK. After the Daily Mail published an article reporting that she posted controversial comments to Facebook, the model was fired by the cosmetics company. It is reported that her Facebook post was a reaction to the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville and that she said "Honestly I don't have energy to talk about the racial violence of white people any more. Yes ALL white people".
Now she has spoken about how she was forced to walk away from a shoot in New York's Times Square after bystanders shouted racist and transphobic abuse.
Crowded places already trigger my anxiety, but I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. But this left me unable to do my job entirely and the whole thing got called off.— Munroe Bergdorf ???????? (@MunroeBergdorf) 6 June 2018
I am sick of living in a world in which cis men continually objectify, other or abuse trans women depending on whether they want to fuck us, ostracize us or impose violence on us. Or all of the above. Allow us to exist. Allow us to do our jobs. Or leave us alone.— Munroe Bergdorf ???????? (@MunroeBergdorf) 6 June 2018
The event comes just a day after Bergdorf spoke about how "statistically I only have four years left to live". A 2014 report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights found that the average life expectancy of transwomen in the US is between 30 and 35.
I'm often asked why I'm so vocal about issues that affect black trans women and people of colour in a wider sense. This is is why... Statistically I only have four years left to live... This is why trans women need access to women only spaces. pic.twitter.com/yfmf8SWagH— Munroe Bergdorf ???????? (@MunroeBergdorf) 6 June 2018
