Since leaving the presidency in 1981, the man from Plains, Georgia, has traveled widely as a global humanitarian. In 2002, Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts towards finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social development for people in more than 80 countries. Now in his late 90s, the elder statesman is the oldest living president, and the longest-retired.
The Carter Center said in a statement that the US icon has “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”
