Do you know what Madonna, Dua Lipa, Pabllo Vittar, and Ellen Page have in common?
A public movement that transcends all borders, a movement that they've all decided to take advantage of. The universal cause that ties them together is this: the rejection of misogyny, homophobia, racism, and militarism.
#EleNão
The hashtag literally translates to "Not Him" in Portuguese. Less than a week before the first round of presidential elections in Brazil, the hashtag has surfaced and multiplied on social networks, finding particular traction among international stars.
Apolitical, this movement nevertheless aims to boycott a particular candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, nicknamed by media around the world "the Brazilian Trump." The Carioca indeed embodies "the resurgence of a racist, homophobic Brazil, and the nostalgia of a military dictatorship," as written by Olivier Poujade, editor at France Inter.
Quotes from Bolsonaro:
"I have five children. Four are men, and then in a moment of weakness the fifth came out a girl."
- 2017
"I would prefer my son to die in an accident than show up with a mustachioed man."
- 2017
"The error of the dictatorship was to torture and not to kill."
- 2008
Despite these overwhelming media responses, the 63-year-old is sadly still pulling through in the polls: 28% of Brazilians say they are ready to give him their vote in the first round on October 7, 2018. Don't let the hopes of Brazilian democracy to offer more education, health, and social peace to its citizens be crushed by this odious storm—wield your networks!
