Taylor Swift finally decided to bridge the gap between celebrity and politics, voicing her opinions regarding the upcoming US midterm elections. In a post on Instagram, a direct line to her 112.1 million followers, she expressed her Democrat values.
The singer explained specifically why she wouldn't be voting for Tennessee Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn who voted against women's equal rights, who discriminates against the LGBTQ community, and who voted against the Violence Against Women Act. She also revealed who she would be voting for—Democrats for both Senate and House of Representatives—and encouraged all her fans to get educated and registered to vote.
On the South Lawn at the White House, Trump was asked about Swift's entrance into politics, and, with a sly grin, he claimed the singer doesn't know anything about the election. But he didn't stop there.
"Let's say that I like Taylor's music about 25% less now," the president said. While it's arguably a cheap shot, it does mean that Trump really does like her music and he was only willing to give up a quarter of his appreciation.
Judge Jeanine Pirro, a very vocal supporter of Trump, told TMZ that the president wouldn't be bothered by the singer's statements, and she also advised Swift to "stick to singing."
What Trump and his supporters may not realize is that Swift's opinion matters to a lot of people, in the same way, that her long-time rival Kanye West's opinions about Trump have impacted many. As someone who was once a TV celebrity and is now the president, Trump might want to pay more attention to the influence of star-power.
According to various sources, registrations to enrol to vote surged after Swifts Instagram post urging people to register.
