CELEBRITY British royal family

Australia has recently welcomed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their official royal tour Down Under! While the visit is full of speeches, hugs, and events, it certainly isn't free. So how much are Australian taxpayers shelling out for the royal red carpet? It is estimated to be over $1 million.

“The Australian Government covers some of the costs associated with a royal tour,” A spokesman for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) told News.com.au. “Any expenditure meets official procurement guidelines.”

The DPMC spokesperson said that through the royal receipt for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's visit has yet to be calculated, it is likely to be in-line with past visits from the British royal family. Costs include security detailing, transportation, meals and accommodation, media liaisons, hospitality, and event-related costs.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have 76 official events scheduled for their 10-day Australian tour, which has already included visiting Sydney’s Taronga Zoo and the Opera House. After a quick trip to Melbourne, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will attend the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games. Then, the couple will meet indigenous leaders at QLD’s Fraser Island.
