The British royal family has been rocked with the news that a historic English tiara has been robbed from their jewel collection. On Tuesday, November 20, The Portland Tiara, made for Winifred, Duchess of Portland, in 1902 was taken from a gallery in Nottinghamshire, England.

As of yet, the BBC has reported that authorities have been unable to track the tiara down. James Lewis of Bamford Auctioneers told the publication that the piece "could be worth millions," and that because it is so recognizable, the tiara will likely be destroyed. He explained, "The most horrendous thought is it could be something called a 'breaker', where the diamonds are taken out and sold individually."

The robbery took place at the Portland Collection Gallery at the Welbeck Estate in Worksop, according to the BBC. The thieves entered the gallery just before 10:00 pm and used power tools to remove the tiara from its protective casing. Though alarms sounded, authorities were unable to catch the robbers.

The Portland Tiara was created for the Duchess to wear to King Edward VII's coronation after the death of Queen Victoria.
