Have you ever experienced that dreadful moment when you arrive somewhere feeling confident, only to realize you are completely underdressed? What about overdressed? That's what comes to mind for many people who watched Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé perform at South Africa's Global Citizen Festival.
Singing their duet 'Perfect,' Queen Bey came out in a high-fashion fuchsia gown, with gravity-defying cascades of fabric, and Sheeran wore jeans, sneakers, and a black T-shirt over a white long sleeve. The Twitterverse then proceeded to explode.
"Ed Sheeran is a 27 year old man the fact we’ve enabled him to feel it’s ok to dress like this at all, let alone next to Beyoncé really boils my piss," the editor at Dazed magazine wrote.

Comedian Chris D'Elia took real offense at that and replied, "Artists should dress how they want. Done here."

Someone compared Beyoncé and Sheeran's outfits to "how I think I look every day" versus "how I really look."

Singer-songwriter Shamir tweeted, "It took THIS f******g long for y'all to realize y'all let Ed Sheeran make a whole a** career out of doing the absolute minimal!?!? I can't with y'all! His WHOLE aesthetic is being mediocre! Why y'all mad at him for playing his part!?!??"
Comedian Solomon Georgio had one of the hottest takes and wrote, "Ed Sheeran is actually wearing a 3-piece custom tuxedo. That’s just what white people always look like standing next to Beyoncé."

One user even asked if they could nominate Ed Sheeran for 'Queer Eye.'

Publications have been less than friendly to the insanely successful singer. "Ed's whole thing is dressing like a very friendly employee at a skateboard shop. And Beyoncé's whole thing is dressing like if the concept of excellence had a thread count," as Elle put it, after asking if it was legal for Sheeran to show up looking like that.
"No shade but actual shade: Ed and Beyoncé together look like roughly 75% of heterosexual couples," the publication added.
They might be onto something there. The difference in expectations for the artists has sparked a debate about gender standards, with some people arguing that it's not fair that women have to put in way more effort, while others argue that to put those expectations on Sheeran is completely unfair.

Perhaps we're all just (still) confused at how these two drastically different artists sound so good together.
