Throughout history, there has been a negative stigma surrounding public breastfeeding. One of The Gap's strongest advertisements to date shows a woman feeding her son.
The company posted the image to Instagram, saying, "Love your forever favorite. Pima cotton and a secret soft wash make these sleep shirts the ones you’ll want to wear, keep, and love. Tap to shop. #LoveByGapBody"
According to the Chicago Tribune, the images are not staged. The model, Adaora Akubilo, needed to breastfeed her son in the middle of the shoot and asked the photographer if it was okay. The female photographer consented and in turn, asked if it was okay to snap a few candid shots. These images have now become some of the most empowering breastfeeding photos circulating the internet.
The comment section of the Instagram post is full of overwhelming praise for the company and for the images. Women and organizations alike are working to break down the barriers of this dated taboo.
