Supreme is the eccentric skatewear brand known for the zaniest of releases. The label has released everything from branded house bricks to chopsticks. Thanks to a fanatic cult fanbase, its products sell out instantly. But Supreme’s latest release isn’t proving too popular with some fans. The label’s recent collaboration with photographer Nan Goldin was released just a week ago. The line has jackets, hoodies, T-shirts, and skateboards featuring photography from Goldin’s 1986 work ‘The Ballad of Sexual Dependency’. Goldin’s photos of trans performers and drag artists are included.

Unlike previous Supreme releases, the collection did not sell out in a matter of minutes. i-D quoted reporter Matthew Schneier as saying “six hours after the Supreme drop hit and there are still plenty of Nan Goldin pieces available... never seen anything like this before”. When Hypebeast covered the collection in a recent article, there were a number of hateful comments. “15 yr old boys gunna be wearing shirts w trannies . Lol”, one user commented. There was also negative backlash on the Supreme online subreddit.

While the media regularly refers to young adults as a generation of tolerance and diversity, Goldin stated that this was not her experience. “I did this for the kids”, Nan Goldin told Vogue, “to my mind, people have become so conservative, especially the millennials – it’s like the 1960s never happened – so I like the idea of them being exposed to my real world”.

You can check out the collection over on i-D.
