The revered Met Gala ball returns to the MoMa this year. For those unaware, celebrity stylist Elizabeth Saltzman can fill you in. “It’s not a costume ball or a fancy-dress party”, she told Vogue, “It’s a benefit for fashion, and a wonderful, glorious opportunity to create business and buzz about the industry”.
The theme this year is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. It’s a little more complicated that 2016’s “Fashion In an Age of Technology” and 2013’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture”.
“I’m sure you’ll see a pope or two”, Saltzman told Vogue. However, it’s a little more complicated than picking papal robes or Vatican colours like red and white. “A designer has to think about who else is sat at their table”, Saltzman noted. “Only one person can wear white, only one person can wear red, etc.”. It’s noted that many celebrities will actually avoid referencing religion. “People don’t remember the theme, they just remember the dress”, the stylist revealed. “It’s my job to make sure the women look amazing, and then adapt the dress to the theme when I can”.
