FASHION Hairstyles

Perms, which is short for permanent waves, are rushing back into popularity. As the hairstyle that defined the looks of the latter portion of the 20th century, perms were a chemically treated way to have big, curly hair without daily styling.

Though perms are most associated with entertainment fashions in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, the hair treatment has been around since the early 1900s. Karl Nesser is the hairdresser that is credited with the invention of the perm. By creating a machine that used heat to spiral the hair, Nesser put artificial curls on the map.

From ammonia to acid perms, this style was innovated throughout the century, however many thought by the end of the '90s that perhaps the perm was out of fashion forever.

Now, permanent waves are back and more stylish than ever. With celebrities such as Emma Stone, Olivia Munn, and Jamie King looking lovely in curled locks, hairdressers around the country are getting their foam rollers out and ready for increased demand.
