Buffalo London’s signature ‘Hightower’ shoe exploded in the 1990s. The chunky trainers were worn by ravers, punks, and even the Spice Girls, who helped make the platform shoes a mainstream craze. The shoes hail from the small town of Hochheim am Main in Germany. The brand started small, but after the Spice Girls spotted them in Oxford Circus, things went through the roof. Alexandra Preusche, Buffalo’s marketing manager, told i-D “it didn’t matter which size or which color — [Buffalos] would be sold out”.
Now, Buffalos are making a comeback. You can buy a pair from VFILES and Opening Ceremony. The relaunch includes a collaboration with the latter. “It was really important to use the old vibe but attaching new faces”, Preusche told i-D. She explained that the brand is “really trying to capture the new generation. It’s not the Spice Girls — Sita Abellan is wearing it”. The Buffalo Classics returned to shelves last November.
