Ice cream parlor the Udder Side has been plunged into hot water. Founded in 1952, the Michigan-based store has served up ice cream for over half a century. However, an age-old flavour has come back to haunt the community store. The ‘Red Indian’ cinnamon flavour was made the dish of the week.
Controversy about the name started when The Hillside Collegian ran a story about the flavour. Soon after, local resident Natasha Crall took to a Facebook group to complain about the “racially insensitive name”. She also talked to the Collegian, saying “Red Indian: It refers to red skin. It’s bigoted and offensive”.
Owners of The Udder Side, Dave and Julie Bauer, shut down the complaints when speaking to the Collegian. “I have never seen anything like that as putting someone down. It’s what it’s called. It’s a flavor of ice cream”, Julie said.
The Udder Side’s flavour of the week is currently Blue Raspberry.
