Steve Johnson has dedicated his life to beef jerky. The man runs BestBeefJerky.org, a review site with big influence in the jerky community. He’s chewed over one thousand types of beef jerky and judged them by a rigorous set of criteria. As Munchies reports, brands are rated on snackabilility, natural meta flavour, advertised flavour, and clean eating. “Jerky that makes a big mess on my hands better give me some awesome flavor and chewing or else what's the point of me getting all messy?”, Johnson asked Munchies. All flavours are organised by meat, brand, and even sodium level on his online database. Johnson is a computer programmer by day, making his beef jerky judgement all the more categorical, “[Jerky] became my coding food of choice”, he told Munchies. Johnson even whips up his own “craft jerky” at pop-up events across America, a concept he hopes to keep alive in the years to come.
