A man has come under fire after scoffing down the hottest chilli pepper on Earth. The anonymous 37-year-old chewed down a Carolina Reaper during a pepper-eating competition. The rash decision led to some severe medical side effects. As the medical report details, the man immediately started being sick and suffering pain in his neck and head. The man thought he was in the clear, until days after the competition the pain returned. As Munchies reports, the man “suffered thunderclap headaches and further extreme pain”. He was sent to Bassett Medical Centre in New York State.

The British Medical Journal found some worrying after-effects of the snack. Arteries in the patient’s brain had narrowed, which was revealed in a CT scan. The man was diagnosed with RCVS, a rare condition that affects blood vessels in the brain.

The Carolina Reaper was named the world’s hottest chilli by Guinness World Records in 2013. It registers at 2.4 million on the Scoville Scale. That’s around 300 times hotter than the hottest jalapeno. Make sure you tread carefully when trying the infamous Carolina Reaper.
