HEALTH sleep

A recent Tech Insider video has sleep expert Matthew Walker walk you through the consequences that come with not sleeping well or enough. "A lack of sleep will prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, it's almost as though without the memory inbox of the brain shuts down, and you can't commit new experiences to memory".

"It is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain kicks into high gear and starts to wash away [a] toxic protein, [called] 'beta amyloid'. If you are no getting enough sleep [...] more of this protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater risk of going on to developing dementia later in life", explained the specialist.

Did you know that sleep deprivation can also affect our reproductive systems? Walker comments "...men who [sleep] just 5 to 6 hours a night have a level of testosterone which is that of someone ten years their senior".

Lack of sleep can also affect your immune system! Sleeping only "4 or 5 hours [...] there is a 70% reduction in critical anti-cancer fighting cells called natural killer cells". A consistent insufficient amount of sleep could lead to bowel, prostate, and breast cancer in the long-run. Although there are many contributors to cancer, sleep is a factor that is in your control.
