Everyone knows Australia is teeming with deadly creatures just waiting to kill you. Not really, but with five of the world's top twenty most deadly snakes living down under, it's hard to argue.

Red-bellied black snake - Native to eastern Australia, these snakes are known for their characteristic black bodies and red-lined undersides.

Pseudechis porphyriacus - Although its venom is potent enough to kill, its bite only injects a small amount, so it's not fatal.

Habitat - There are commonly found in woodlands, forests and swamp lands.

Small-eyed snake - This native snake is endemic to the eastern parts of Australia.

Cryptophis nigrescens - As a night-dweller, this snake has shiny metallic black scales with a creamy to coral orange belly.

Bites - The venom sometimes has no effect on humans, sometimes causes renal failure and possibly death, with one recorded death from small-eyed snake bite.

Lowland copperhead - Ranging throughout southeast Australia, including Tasmania, lowland copperhead snakes are categorised from their copper-tinged scales on their head with neurotoxic venom, capable of killing an adult human if proper first aid is not applied.

Austrelaps superbus - They grow up to 1m long on average, but some from the Bass Strait region have been measured at 1.7m long.

Venom - These snakes have neurotoxic venom that is capable of killing an adult human within hours, if correct first aid is not applied promptly.

Mulga snake - Also known as the King Brown snake, although it is not closely related to the brown snake.

Pseudechis australis - These Australian snakes can be found all over Australia except Victoria and Tasmania, avoiding the south coast entirely.

Deadly - Mulga snake venom consists of myotoxins and can be lethal. It must be treated with black snake anti-venom.

Coastal taipan - This snake is the longest venomous snake in Australia.

Oxyuranus scutellatus - It can be found in the northern and eastern coastal area of Australia.

Highly dangerous - Anyone who is bitten by a coastal taipan can expect headache, vomiting, convulsions, paralysis, internal bleeding, myolysis, and kidney damage, if not treated promptly.

Western brown snake - Also known as gwardar, this snake can be found all over Australia, including throughout all of VIC, QLD and NT.

Pseudonaja nuchalis - Preferring drier climates, this ground dwelling snake can also be found in coastal forests, woodlands, and grasslands.

Death - Although these snakes are generally cautious and shy, it will defend itself if threatened with its highly venomous bite. If treatment is not administered promptly, it can be deadly.

Mainland Tiger Snake - This snake is found in the southern regions of Australia, including Tasmania.
