South Africa is running dangerously low on a drinkable water supply. Cape Town, which has the second largest reservoir in the country, is near empty, and African politicians believe that the nation will run completely dry by July of this year.

As conservation efforts increase exponentially, Capetonians have altered a lot of the routines most take for granted. According to an article from Quartzy, this includes an entirely different beauty routine.

One way to save water has to do with taking off makeup. Women are removing foundation and eyeliner with micellar water or wipes rather than washing their faces with water.

Another is to stop shaving. “I don’t know a single woman out of my friend group who still shaves her legs,” 26-year-old Julia Sullivan said. “Some people wax if they did that before, but most of my female friends have hairy legs.”

South African women have had to get creative with hair styling. Due to less frequent and much faster showers, women are washing their hair a lot less. Braids, buns, and even headscarves are ways to keep scalps from getting greasy.

As dealing with droughts is familiar territory for Americans as well, keeping your beauty routine water-conscious may be more and more of a reality for the rest of the world.
