LIFESTYLE Weddings

Weddings are full of tradition. From something borrowed and something blue, to the words you speak to your beloved during the ceremony, a lot of your special day is due to by decades of practice. However, some wedding day traditions didn't make it to the 21st century—for good reason. According to Bustle, here is a list of terrible wedding traditions that were left in the past.

1. Stealing bits of the bride's dress for good luck
In Europe, it used to be tradition to rip parts of the bride's gown to keep for yourself. It was considered a symbol of fertility and youth but often left the young bride in tatters. Now, this tradition has evolved into throwing the bouquet. Save the dress, steal the flowers.

2. Exchanging one sister for another as the bride
In the 16th century, it was very common to see women from the same family as exchangeable. While modern siblings shudder at the thought of this practice, back then, if one sister died or was unfit to wed, the groom would just go for the other.

3. Getting married in your underwear
As a signifier of not bringing past debts into a new marriage, women in the 18th century would be married in their "shifts," which is basically just fancy undergarments. Some even took the tradition as far as to get married completely in the nude.

4. Throwing things at the happy couple
While throwing rice at the newlyweds is still a tradition, in the old days, couples endured much worse. In Renaissance Italy, people would actually throw rocks or garbage at the bride and groom. It was so common that laws had to be enacted to stop the harassment. Couples in Southern France still have to dodge spare change as they exit the church.
