It's hard not to be envious when you see hair product commercials featuring silky smooth locks and shine that could make you go blind. While embellishment is the backbone of advertising, do hair product commercials cross the line?

Celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis often works on merchandising shoots and has no problem saying it is all an elaborate illusion. With green screens, props, and extensions, the truth behind the set is that no bottle of defrizzing shampoo is going to turn you into a model overnight.

"It's so funny because I've always said that I'm in the business of smoke and mirrors,” Francis told Teen Vogue. "Not to discredit or discount any of the people that I work with, but we are creating a fantasy and an illusion for people to aspire to, or at least just be entertained by. I think there is a very clear line that divides aspirational and unattainable hair campaigns, but somewhere along the way that line got blurred."

As media and advertising ethics have been shifting towards an era of honest marketing, perhaps consumers will start seeing something a little closer to reality during TV breaks.
