These famous Americans can’t actually be addressed as Sir or Dame since they don’t have British citizenship. But they can use the suffix KBE or DBE, for Knight (or Dame) Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, after their names. So, what do you have to do to become Jane Doe DBE? The order was created in 1917 by King George V to honor civilian and military behavior in wartime. But the order quickly expanded to include peace efforts and other achievements. So, basically anyone who has achieved major, long-term contribution in any activity, usually at a national (British) or international level.
