>didir="ltr">“Fintas” are the latest trend on social media, well sort of. A “finsta”, or “fake Instagram”, is a secret Instagram profile reserved only for your closest counterparts. Whereas your normal Instagram profile is a collage of travel images, party snapshots, and summer sunsets, finsta is reserved for your hidden side. There, you could post diary entries, private pictures, or just about anything without being judged by followers.

So what makes a finsta so appealing? Nhyira, a student, told i-D, “in America, kids typically use finsta to vent and post ridiculous photos”. However, “back home it’s a platform for people to post their quote-on-quote inappropriate photos”. Developing on that, Nhyira notes that finsta is a place for self-expression, when other social medias can be more constraining. Sorority girl Sarah also spoke to i-D about the appeal of finsta. She says that at the University of Arizona, “you look at the number of followers on each person’s account and make harsh snap judgments. It’s everything”. Finsta then, provides the safe space to escape fakeness and materialism in the online world.  Meanwhile, social media influencer Vienna Vernose uses her finsta as a “visual diary”, a place to separate her “physical and emotional self”.
