Marijuana will soon be legalized in Canada, and a recent report from the National Cannabis Survey indicates that Canadians may seek out the drug in new forms and quantities.

In the past three months, 14% of Canadians aged 15 and older have consumed cannabis.

The percentage of use by province is as follows: Nova Scotia has the highest percentage of users (20%); then British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba (17%); Newfoundland (16%); Saskatchewan (15%); Ontario, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island (14%); and, finally, Quebec has the smallest percentage of users (10%).

The top three forms in which Canadians are consuming marijuana are: through a dried leaf/flower (76%), edibles (28%), and hashish or kief (11%).

Where do people currently get their cannabis?

  • 31% get it from a family member or a friend
  • 22% just share with a group of friends
  • 20% get it from an "acquaintance"
  • 19% buy it from a dispensary or storefront
  • 19% get it from an unlicensed dealer
  • 14% purchase it online from a licensed producer
When cannabis is officially legalized, half of all surveyed cannabis users said they may purchase it from another source, 24% said they may try new products, and 21% said they may increase their consumption.
