Google has announced that it is pulling the plug on its messaging app, Allo. The Verge reports that Google’s head of communications. Anil Sabharwal, made the choice to “pause investment” in the app. Instead, the company will focus on Android Messages. The decision comes as Google invests in Rich Communication Services, otherwise known as RCS. As The Verge notes, the service will be labelled “chat” when it is launched. Therefore, the company must invest wisely in a functioning messaging app.
It’s also noted that Allo did not have a strong enough following to continue development. The competition is tough, with monster apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Sabharwal explained that Allo hadn’t “achieved the level of traction we’d hoped for”. The app was meant to ”get hundreds of millions of people to get excited about and use. And where we are, we’re not feeling like we’re on that trajectory”, as reported by The Verge.
For those with Allo installed, you’ll still be able to use the app. Google has promised it will “continue to support” the messenger to some extent.
