For many students, remaining focused and attentive throughout the school day can be challenging. Similarly, teachers are tasked with the job of trying to capture their engagement. As the season's change and the weather begins lends way to more time outside, teachers should consider the benefits of having class outside.

A study based out of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign showed that students who spend time learning outside are significantly more engaged once they return back to the classroom. The researchers worked with a group of third-grade students who were doing a biology lesson. These findings held true regardless of the teacher, the time of day, or the time of year, according to the study.

“Kids can actually pay better attention in class after an outdoor lesson,” Ming Kuo, the lead researcher said. “This is nice for teachers because you don’t have to stop teaching and you still get that bump in attention.”

Next time your students are restless, take a minute to recharge outside—it may be better for the whole classroom.
