LIFESTYLE Networking

Nowadays, business happens over a stationary bike rather than a strong cocktail. As health and fitness become more and more popular, professionals are using exercising as a gateway to networking—dubbed sweatworking.

“I pitch it as a meeting without the meeting,” Lindsey Anvik, a North Carolina-based business coach told Moneyish. When organizing a face-to-face with a potential client, she suggests going to a spin or kickboxing class. “It takes the pressure off of trying to force a connection over an awkward lunch,” Anvik said.

It helps that exercise has taken a turn towards luxury. With boutique gyms such as Equinox, Barry’s Bootcamp, and SoulCycle, being invited to a free class is something many would not skip over.

When it comes to smart business, it's all about connection. Compared to say meeting for coffee, sweatworking is "more of a commitment, which makes it an effective sales tool because they almost never back out,” Anvik said. “It also is self-serving for them. They benefit from an hour of working out, too.”

While men have been conducting business over a round of golf for years, sweatworking is a way for women and men alike to meet, greet, and get on your feet.

“The endorphins are flowing and everyone’s in a good mood,” Anvik said. “It’s easy to say, ‘I had a great time with you, and I’d love to talk about the projects you’re working on sometime next week.’

Next time you need to conduct business, leave your suit at home, grab your tennis shoes, and spend the meeting sweatworking.
