LIFESTYLE Selfies

Smile for the camera! Cell phone photography and selfie culture have become a worldwide phenomenon over the last several years. Whether it's posing with friends at a party or capturing a moment in front of a national monument, the phrase "let's take a selfie" is no surprise for modern ears.

However, is there a dark side to this documentation? The Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery released statistics about the number of selfie-related deaths internationally, marking how many people have died mid-pose, and what they were doing when it happened.

Between December 2013 and January 2017, the world saw 57 individuals die by drowning while trying to take a selfie, 27 people died due to a falling incident, 18 selfie-takers were crushed by trains, and 8 people were shot while snapping a picture. The list also includes electrocution, truck collision, animal encounter, explosion, motorcycle collision, and hot water burns.

The survey also released a information about the most obscure cases of selfie-related death. In 2016, a Chinese tourist was tragically dragged underwater by a walrus while trying to get a wildlife selfie. Next, a Russian selfie-taker exploded while trying to get a photo with a hand grenade.
