LIFESTYLE Eat with your hands

We all strive to be polite, more than often we are afraid to deviate from our fork and knife, no matter how awkward or clumsy it may be. The good news is that you can use your hands while still coming across as well-mannered, just as long as you follow some basic etiquette.

Napkins
Never eat with your hands without stocking up on napkins first. One won’t be enough, so take two or three of them and use them generously. Never reach for a pile of shared napkins with dirty hands, as you’ll inadvertently sully the napkins that are meant for others. Also make sure that you never lick your fingers, no matter how tempting it is.

Size matters
Be extra careful with big pieces of food, as you’re more likely to spill everywhere and make a big old mess. Use your knife to create more manageable bite-sized pieces and then use your hands. If you spill a tiny bit of food on your plate, never pick it up with your hands. Use your fork, as grabbing a tiny piece with your hands looks particularly unappealing and your fingers are more likely to touch your mouth when eating it.

Standard etiquette
Keep in mind that all other rules still apply when eating with your hands. Sit up straight, keep your elbows off the table and always keep your hands above the table. Don’t speak with your mouth full and take small bites so you don’t get any residue on your lips.

While it’s usually perfectly acceptable to eat with your hands, you can keep using a knife and fork if you prefer. The most important aspect of using your hands is to be more practical and less messy. If the opposite is true, stick to using utensils.
