Older murder documentaries that are scarier than Hollywood horror

'Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills' (1996)
In West Memphis, AK, three young boys were brutally murdered. Without any evidence, police arrested three boys just slightly older than the victims, and they were given life sentences. This documentary, which delves into the apparent prejudices in small-town America, is a must-see. This film is available for streaming on Amazon Video.
'The Thin Blue Line' (1988)
Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris tells the story of Randall Adams, a man sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit. A staple in the history of nonfiction filmmaking, 'The Thin Blue Line' is not only a compelling story, but also helped to free a wrongly convicted man. You can stream it on Netflix.
'Dear Zachary' (2008)
If you are prepared to shed tears, 'Dear Zachary' is possibly one of the most tragic true stories told on film. The documentary tells the story of Andrew Bagby, a man who was murdered after romantic relations with Shirley Jane Turner went awry. Knowing she would be a lead suspect, Turner fled to Canada. During the long battle for extradition, she announced she was pregnant with Bagby's son, Zachary. The story of a faulty justice system, filmmaker Kurt Kuenne sheds light on this tragic tale. It is available for streaming on Amazon Video.
