In 'First Reformed,' Ethan Hawke stars as a minister in upstate New York, trying to make sense of religion in the 21st century. Declared as one of the top films this year, writer and filmmaker Paul Schrader, who is best known for 'Taxi Driver,' sharply depicts the clash of religion and modern life.
Following Hawke trying to keep his small church in Albany County alive under the shadow of a nearby megachurch, he begins to question his faith. Discussing the line between church and business, the film uses profound imagery and analogies to discuss convoluted subjects. Dark, enlightening, and powerful, 'First Reformed' shows Hawke in what may be one of his most important cinematic roles.
