Stormzy is in talks to perform at a concert that will honour Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in a racially motivated attack 25 years ago. Talks began after the rapper met Lawrence’s mother, Doreen, at the BRIT Awards. Doreen Lawrence is discussing the concert with executives of Universal Music Group. NME quotes her as saying “Stormzy spoke to me about getting involved”. Lawrence also explained that “we’d like to put on a few different concerts around London rather than one single memorial”.
The concert is set to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Stephen Lawrence’s death. He was killed while waiting for a bus in April, 1993. Following the tragic event, his mother founded The Stephen Lawrence Trust. Rapper Stormzy addressed social issues during his BRIT Awards performance. In a freestyle, he rapped “Theresa May where’s the money for Grenfell? / What you thought we just forgot about Grenfell?”
