The BBC has announced "a new music legacy in east London", with new studios to be constructed as part of its Stratford Waterfront development. The site will incorporate recording and rehearsal studios and act as a base for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The organisation has said in an statement that the move will enable the BBC to record and broadcast more live music than ever before.

The move means the closure of the legendary Maida Vale studios after 84 years. The world-famous studios have hosted thousands of performances through the years, from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie to Beyoncé. The studios were constructed in 1909 as a rollerskating venue and the BBC converted the space to studios in the 1930s.

Social media has responded to the news with recognition of the Maida Vale studios' place in music history and the BBC archives shared some vintage footage.
