TRAVEL San Antonio

Morgan’s Inspiration Island in San Antonio is the first fully wheelchair-accessible water park in the world. This tropical-themed splash park for children of all abilities opened in July of 2017. Including five different play areas and a riverboat ride, this wonderland brings smiles to every face there.

The park was built with consultations from water park experts, doctors, therapists, teachers, and parents of disabled children.

The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation built and runs the park. The founder, Gordon Hartman, was inspired by his daughter who uses a wheelchair. “Morgan’s Inspiration Island will concentrate on inclusion and inspire guests with special needs to do things previously thought not to be in their range of capabilities,” he said, according to Lonely Planet.

The park offers guests special wheelchairs that are not only water-resistant, but also propel themselves forward using compressed air.

The chance for disabled and non-disabled children to play alongside each other in a theme park setting is a huge stride for the wheelchair community.
