TRAVEL Cambodia
When you take a trip to Cambodia, your stomach goes on quite the adventure as well. The southeast Asian country is known for beautiful architecture, a stunning coastline, and a curious cuisine that isn't for the faint of heart.
From deep-fried tarantulas to garnishing dishes with fire ants, bugs and crawling creatures are so prevalent in the cuisine that even gourmet restaurants indulge in insects.
“They’re not dangerous,” Davy Blouzard a French restaurateur in Cambodia told Mic.com. He explained that keeping live tarantulas and scorpions in his restaurant was totally safe. “No fangs.”
Blouzard's menu is made up of Khmer classics with a French twist. His most famous insect creations are wok-fried crickets and silkworms, which can be prepared spicy, Szechuan-style or in a Mediterranean fashion. There's also his tarantula donut, which is battered, deep-fried, and served with mango chutney.
“The point is really to stick to Cambodian culture,” Blouzard said.“We don’t want to put stress on the challenge [of making insects appetizing]. We want to show it’s like any other food.”
