TRAVEL Travel

Do you ever feel like you keep running into people from the same countries when you travel? Well, you probably do. The site Traveller made a list of the world's biggest travelers, and, as you can imagine, they're mainly from the Western world.

People from Finland take more trips than any other nationality. The average Finnish person takes 7.5 trips a year at home and abroad.

The US is not far behind at 6.7 trips a year, but less than one-fifth of these trips are international and less than half of the US population owns a passport. The United States is actually the largest domestic travel market in the world.

The Swedish come in third, taking 4.4 domestic and 1.5 international trips a year.

Like the US, most Danish travel more domestically. This is likely because one in six families also own a second home. Danish people take 3.9 domestic trips a year and 1.4 trips abroad.

The US and Scandinavian countries make up the top five spots, largely due to higher incomes so they can afford to travel more.

Hong Kong and New Zealand are tied for sixth place, with 4.3 total trips per year. However, people from Hong Kong take more international flights while those from New Zealand usually travel within their own country.

The final three spots are taken up by Canada, Australia, then France. All of these countries tend to travel far more domestically than they do abroad.

While all of these countries make up the most traveled, the majority spend their holidays within the borders of their own land. That begs the question—why do all these wanderers still stay so close to home?
