What is ski ballet?
The unique Olympic sport that was discontinued
At the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, audiences were graced with the unique sport of ski ballet, however it was discontinued from both the Olympics and international ski competitions altogether.
Ski ballet is precisely what it sounds like. Choreographed dancing on skis that includes jumps, spins, and other stunts. It is set to music, and often included costumes with big sleeves. The most famous Ski Ballet Olympians were Genia Fuller, Jeff Chumas, and Suzy Chaffee, to name a few.
Ski ballet was all but forgotten until NBC's website released a short video of the sport, bringing back major nostalgia. Check out this clip of French Olympian Christine Rossi in the Women's Ski Ballet Finals.
Apparently, the demonstration was dropped because of lack of interest, but the wave of excitement over it online has us all saying #bringbackskiballet.
