Construction show ‘DIY SOS’ will produce a special charity episode for the Grenfell community. There will be a new boxing gym built for the community. The last gym was destroyed in the devastating Grenfell fire, which claimed the lives of 71 people last year. There will also be a new community centre built in the area. Presenter Nick Knowles told BBC News “it is the biggest and morally most important project we have done in a long time”. A Grenfell resident told BBC News that “it will make a difference, bring some form of peace round here”.
A deal was struck on March 8, with “full consultation with the community”, BBC News reports. The foundation will be “built inside a year”. ‘DIY SOS’ first hit screens in 1999. It rebranded in 2010 as ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’, taking on more ambitious projects. The team recently reconstructed a house for a disabled mother of four in West Sussex.
