TV 13 reasons why

The controversial Netflix series '13 Reasons Why' puts a spotlight on high school bullying, sexual assault, and suicide. While some praise the show for discussing these pressing issues, others worry it inappropriately glamorises dark topics.

A new study out of the University of Michigan has officially proven the latter. Researchers examined 87 teens who had entered “a psychiatric emergency department with suicide-related concerns in the year after the series’ premiere.” Of the 87 teens, 49% watched '13 Reasons Why' and 51% admitted that the show “increased their suicide risk.”

Netflix has released two seasons of '13 Reasons Why' and is currently in production on the third. The series in produced by Selena Gomez, who claims that reading the novels of the same name during her formative years helped her growth.

While trigger warnings play before each episode that portrays suicide or sexual assault,  many wonder if that's enough to deter impressionable viewers.
